ABOUT NENE'S TREATS CRUMB CAKE
Nene, whose real name is Marie Felice (“Nene” is her grandson, Kyle’s, nickname for her), started baking as a little girl with her mom in the 1930s. The middle daughter in an extended family of chefs, Nene made her mark in the dessert aisle, baking around the clock. She has spent her whole life cooking and baking for her wonderful family. Her signature New Jersey-style crumb cake, developed with a secret, original recipe more than 50 years ago in her home state of (you guessed it) New Jersey, has truly withstood the test of time.
In 2005, Nene, her daughter, Susan Owens, and her granddaughter, Stefanie Owens, launched a wholesale bakery business, supplying scrumptious, preservative-free, baked goods to many Charleston bakeries and restaurants. People were struck crumb by how delicious their baked goods were, and the ladies were soon rolling out riffs on the original such as blueberry crumb cake, pumpkin crumb cake, and chocolate crumb cake. Demand reached beyond South Carolina, and they began to ship nationwide, too. The three ladies still roll up their sleeves together every day in the kitchen and churn out delectable confections with laughter and love that you can taste in every bite.
